Reiji Fujita is the owner of an art gallery called “Gallery Fake”. It’s a gallery where he sells fake art pieces. It’s rumored that behind the scenes he sells real art pieces for horrendous prices. Fujita is currently in New York with his assistant Sara, because of the auction of a painting of Monet. A day before the auction he went to the museum to look at the painting. At the museum he bumped into two of his acquaintances: Ms. Mitamura (director of Takada Museum) and Max Watson, Fujita’s ex-co-worker from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET). Max Watson is surprised to see Fujita again, because he was the one who fired Fujita. Later on Max Watson had lunch with a dealer named Bill Travers. They both seem to hate Fujita and decided to do everything they can to prevent Fujita from getting the Monet painting. Meanwhile Fujita has contacted a collector who might be interested in buying the Monet painting. His name is Mr. Aubrey and Fujita knew him from his days working for the MET. At first Mr. Aubrey wasn’t interested in Fujita’s offer, but after Fujita returned to his hotel room Mr. Aubrey called him up and said to him he won’t pay more than 10 million dollars for the painting. The next day Fujita and Sara went to the auction. He taught Sara that there are bidders who don’t want anyone to know how much he or she bid. Instead of raising their hands or calling their bid, they will use signals (such as raising one finger or taking of their hat) to let the auctioneer know they’re bidding for the item as well. When it was time for the auction of the Monet painting, Fujita let Sara do the bidding for him. Bill Travers and Max Watson guessed Fujita’s budget and thought he wouldn’t bid more than 10 million dollars, but to everyone’s surprise Fujita told Sara to bid more than 10 million dollars. Bill Travers competed with Sara for the painting, but in the end it was Sara who bought the painting for 30 million dollars. Fujita wanted to buy the painting at all cost, because he wanted to get even with Max Watson. Fifteen years ago, when Fujita was still working for the MET, Max Watson reattributed (reattribution = determine whether a piece of art is real or fake and changing the artist’s name) fifty art pieces and secretly sold them to Bill Travers at extremely low prices. Fujita found out about this and confronted Max Watson with it. Max Watson didn’t want to be exposed and fired Fujita. The Monet painting was one of the fifty art pieces Max Watson reattributed.
Ms. Mitamura, who was at the auction as well, asked Fujita which trick he is planning to use to pay for the painting. Fujita answered he still has a painting (a fake) that he can sell for 20 million dollars.
Hmm, can’t say I’m impressed with this first episode. The artwork is mediocre, the music fits the series but it’s not my style and the plot is quite vague. The characters don’t appeal to me at all. Perhaps I should give it a few more episodes, for now this series is quite boring. It has no humor, no plot (at least not yet), no action and no interesting characters. The most interesting part in this episode was the auction of the Monet painting.
