The southern Tokyo Pantasia store received a P-card. It’s a draft for a challenge that brings together all the newcomers from all 128 stores around the country. The goal of the challenge is to measure the skills of the newcomers against each other. Ken was the winner eleven years ago. Tsukino was among the top three eight years ago. Whoever wins the challenge will receive one million Yen, a sabbatical to France and a special treatment of possible placement at the main store. This year the competition is between 512 newcomers, three times more than the usual number. The first assignment is to make long lasting dinner bread. The bread has to remain eatable for at least three weeks. Kazuma immediately thinks of Japan #32. He changed his clothes and left the store after saying he is going to search for the ingredients for Japan #32. He even told Kawachi he would gather the ingredients for him as well. Kawachi doesn’t seem to like it though. He wants to win the challenge by himself, because he doesn’t want to rely on Kazuma’s skills. Seeing him like this, Tsukino decided to help Kawachi gain “Solar Hands”.
She took Kawachi to a sports club to train him. Tsukino tells Kawachi to swim 10km twice a day. Kawachi has to swim with a float on that becomes heavier after it absorbed moisture. Ken was at the sports club as well. He knows Tsukino is helping Kawachi, because she is after the price money. Tsukino admits part of her is doing this for the money, because she wants to use the money to remodel the southern Tokyo Pantasia store. Another reason why she is helping Kawachi is because she truly believes in him.
Meanwhile Kawachi is about to give up on his training. The training is too intense. When Kawachi was slowly sinking to the bottom of the pool, he heard his father’s voice. His father’s dream was to become an employee of the Pantasia main store so that he can provide his family with a better life. Each year he applied for the new employee exam, but he never passed it. Although he kept failing, Kawachi’s father never gave up. He taught his son not to give up as well. One day when Kawachi’s father was baking bread again his oven caught fire which burned down the entire house with Kawachi’s father still in it. Ever since that day, Kawachi has been determined to fulfill his father’s dream to provide his family with a better life. After remembering his father’s words, Kawachi resumed his training.
No bread baking in this episode, instead we get to know a bit more about Kawachi’s past. Now I understand why he wants to become an employee of the main store so badly. Can’t wait to watch the challenge between the newcomers, but I think I’ll have to wait for at least a few more episodes. Kawachi has to finish his training first and Kazuma has to find the ingredients for Japan #32.
